Art in the City 2017

The tenth edition of Art in the City. It is only a number, I tell myself, and yet I feel the need to take stock, to look back, to weigh things up. Ten years ago I finished at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague and showed my diploma work, Humanoids, on Lannova třída in České Budějovice. That was the moment that set off the tradition of summer sculpture exhibitions, the birth of Art in the City.

After ten years this project can take pride in a constant “supply” of new artists, in well-known names and international artists, but above all in its continuity, in the undiminished enthusiasm of everyone who takes part in it, in the interest of its visitors and in the support of the city.

In those 10 years I have met a great many good people, from sculptors to lorry drivers; I became a curator without wishing it or planning it, and found out what it is like to organise the very different activities that so large an event involves. Life is above all about people, and it does not matter where you are but whom you meet along the way. Thanks to sculpture I have met many kind people — not only fellow artists, craftspeople and organisers, but also visitors and residents of České Budějovice, and later residents and collaborators from Hluboká nad Vltavou and Veselí nad Lužnicí. Enjoy this anniversary edition and take pleasure in the sculptures that simply belong to summer, and not only in České Budějovice!
